A cruiser is equally nasty as a supernova or a nova when it comes to destructive power. That fact that it can rain kinetic bombardments on planets make a ship to respect. The big problem with nasty weapons is that once you have them you can’t get rid of them because someone else might use them on you. Self-defense is a seductive excuse.
